September of this year, I got a new job working for a research lab in my university. My supervisor is a very nice woman who turned out to be from my hometown back in Russia. I thought I'd talk about how stupid and inherently sexist the idea of a Mary Sue really is (as someone has recently enlightened me). I mean, I get it, prodigy over-powered Chosen One characters are boring. It's something that doesn't keep a reader interested for long, and just generally a sign of bad writing and a poorly-developed character. But the term "Mary Sue" gets disproportionately applied to female characters, while male Mary Sues are the leads of beloved reknown franchises. How about Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji? Ichigo from Bleach? Captain Kirk from the very franchise that created the term? How about every single hero of the old ep
