September of this year, I got a new job working for a research lab in my university. My supervisor is a very nice woman who turned out to be from my hometown back in Russia. Her son went to both the school that I attended in Russia, AND the school I attended in Canada. Her niece used to be best friends with my aunt. hat was kinda crazy. I thought I'd talk about how stupid and inherently sexist the idea of a Mary Sue really is (as someone has recently enlightened me). I mean, I get it, prodigy over-powered Chosen One characters are boring. It's something that doesn't keep a reader interested for long, and just generally a sign of bad writing and a poorly-developed character. But the term "Mary Sue" gets disproportionately applied to female characters, while male Mary Sues are the leads of beloved reknown franchises. How about Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji? Ichigo from Bleach? Captain Kirk from the very franchise that created the term? How about every single hero of the old ep

So, confession time. up until about a year ago, I had difficulties coming up with female characters. I mean, I liked women alright. I didn't think they were "back-stabbing catty bitches" or whatever the party line is these days among women trying to "just be one of the boys". It's true I predominantly tend to get along with men better, but that's because we tend to have more similar interests; I had plenty of more "boyish" (quotations there on purpose) female friends as well (and a few extremely girly ones too, though they had to be able to put up with my weirdness to stick around).
